Several football players narrowly escaped with their lives after the van they were travelling in was involved in a road accident along the busy Kitale-Lodwar highway on Sunday morning.
According to reports, the players were travelling back home from a league match when the Turkrift Shuttle carrying the players collided with another vehicle at Karoge Centre in Turkana South.
The accident left several players injured, with a number of them losing consciousness from the impact of the crash. Luckily, no fatalities were reported.
Images and videos of the crash scene paint a harrowing picture, with some of the stunned passengers aboard the van spotted sitting on the ground, presumably processing what had just happened. Others were forced to lie on the ground as they awaited medical assistance.
In a statement, the club confirmed the accident, confirming that the injured players were receiving medical attention at nearby facilities.
"We regret to inform you with sorrow that some of our players have been involved in a road accident, a collision between two vehicles," the club said in a statement.
"A few of them are currently unconscious, but we thank God there have been no fatalities. They have all been rushed to the hospital and are receiving the necessary medical attention."
The club further urged the public to refrain from publicising unverified information on the accident, insisting that any new developments would be communicated through the club's official social media pages.
One of the players, the goalkeeper, reportedly sustained worrying injuries and was quickly rushed to the Lodwar County and Referral Hospital.
The incident came just weeks after several students sustained injuries when a 14-seater matatu they were travelling in got involved in an accident at Witeithie, Kiambu County.
According to witnesses, the learners believed to be from Mugoiri Girls High School were travelling home for their April holidays when the matatu lost control and veered off the road before landing in a ditch.
While the exact number of learners who got involved in the accident is yet to be established, there are no reports from the early morning incident.
Such accidents, especially those involving smaller vehicles, have largely been attributed to human error, particularly reckless driving, according to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority.
Another worrying statistic from the authority as far as road accidents are concerned, is that approximately 12 people have lost their lives daily from road accidents in the 2024/25 financial year.
In many cases, drivers tend to attempt overtaking at undesignated areas, effectively heightening the chances of collisions or the vehicle veering off the road in an attempt to avoid hitting another oncoming vehicle.
