The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Thursday, May 8, directed motorists to collect their number plates from their respective application centres.

Following the directive, some motorists reported challenges in checking the status of their number plates and knowing the collection centres.

To avert such problems, NTSA usually sends brief text messages notifying motorists when and where to collect their items. However, some drivers fail to receive these messages.

Failure to receive a notification from NTSA could be due to factors such as an incomplete application, unpaid fees, or incorrect information provided during the application process.

Thus, NTSA recommends that applicants always check the status of their number plates and driving licences to know whether they have been processed or not.

The Authority recently came up with an online process through which motorists can often check the status of their number plates and driving licences.

How to Check

A motorist seeking to check the status of their number plates and driving license is required to access the NTSA website: ntsa.go.ke

Upon accessing the website, click on the Online Services section. A drop-down menu will appear, consisting of two sections: the NTSA Services and Other Services.

Once a user clicks on the Other Services menu, a new tab titled Uncollected Smart DLs and Number Plates will appear with a Selection Option menu.

Consequently, click on the Select option to choose either Number Plate or Driving Licence.

According to NTSA, those seeking to check the status of their smart driving licence are required to use their ID number only, while those seeking to check the status of their number plate are advised to use their vehicle registration number.

A vehicle registration number is a unique combination of letters and numbers assigned to a vehicle for identification and legal purposes.

There are instances where the status of a driving licence may indicate 'Archived'. This means that the driver has been suspended by the Authority or the licence holder has been removed from the NTSA database.

NTSA usually declines to renew and instead archives licences of drivers facing convictions for crimes that are mostly related to traffic offences.
