Detectives have zeroed in on the man responsible for pulling the trigger to kill Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong'ondo Were, 12 days after the lawmaker lost his life.

In a well-coordinated operation, detectives were able to arrest arguably the most crucial suspect in the case just as he was about to flee the country.

An officer close to the investigation revealed intrigues of the operation, as detectives were able to piece together the suspect's movements immediately after he took out the MP on April 30.

The suspect reportedly fled to the Mihang'o area in Embakasi immediately after the fatal shooting. Incidentally, this was the same area where police recovered a Sarsilmaz pistol, which was positively identified as the murder weapon.

From Mihang'o, the suspect reportedly took a boda boda to Narok, where he easily blended in before boarding a PSV headed for Isibania – a border town in Migori County.

Detectives believe the suspect's plan was to escape across the border with the help of a relative.

Authorities intercepted communication between the suspect on the run and other individuals already in custody in a move which helped them track the fugitive's movements closely. This also helped them pinpoint his exact hiding place in Isibania.

Before the suspect could execute his escape plan to neighbouring Tanzania, he was arrested alongside another individual believed to have been facilitating his hideout, bringing the total number of arrested suspects to 11.

Were's suspected killer is now expected to be presented at the JKIA Law Courts on Monday, May 12, where he will face formal charges just like the other suspects, who will stay in detention for at least a month as investigations continue.

An interesting twist to the case saw Businessman Philip Nahashon Aroko surrender to Gigiri Police Station on Wednesday night after he was summoned by the DCI.

Meanwhile, investigations remain active, with detectives still trying to fully uncover how the murder was planned and executed.

The late Charles Were was buried on Friday, May 9, in a sombre ceremony at his home in Oyugis. During the burial, the family spoke in unison, demanding swift justice for the slain MP and calling on authorities to ensure that those behind his murder are held accountable.

They insisted that their father’s killers must be brought to book without compromise or delay.
