The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Nyamira branch has announced that nurses in the county will down their tools on Tuesday, May 13, at midnight.

In a press briefing on Monday, May 12, the union stated that the Nyamira County Government should act swiftly and address issues affecting the nurses, including unfavourable working conditions, salary delays, and the promotion of doctors, before the strike starts.

The union has noted that the delay of salaries, which to some has extended by 10 months, has led some nurses to lack basic necessities such as transport and in turn crippled their ability to deliver quality healthcare to residents in the county.

"We, as the leaders of the KNUN Nyamira Branch, are here to announce a strike that will start on Tuesday. The county should ensure that all nurses who are to be promoted are promoted. The county should ensure that all the nurses are redesignated, especially those who have done a degree," one of the union leaders said.

So far, according to the leaders,  despite their efforts to engage the county government to address the issues, the county still remains reluctant to address them.

"We've tried our best to talk to you, and we are tired, and we are no longer going to wait. You have to resolve our issues so that we can go back to work," another member stated.

The announcement comes weeks after the KNUN Secretary General, Seth Panyako, threatened, on Sunday, April 20, to kickstart a countrywide nurse strike due to the poor handling of the healthcare sector by the county governments.

According to the SG, most counties have not been remitting statutory deductions, which has led nurses across the country not to receive quality healthcare, in addition to being reluctant to hire more nurses in hospitals.

Panyako claimed that the devolved units should consider channelling some responsibilities to the national government to ensure that the grievances of the nurses are addressed effectively.

"Some counties are deducting funds from the salaries of workers, but they are not remitting, and I want to say that in the next seven days, if these funds aren't released, we will go on strike," he said.

"The county government of Trans Nzoia has been deducting salaries, but they have not been remitting money to pay for loans, their insurance covers, and union dues. It is not possible that you are offering health services and you yourself can't access the services,"  he added.

Speaking in Mombasa on Saturday, May 10, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Davji Atellah urged the Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale to up his game to ensure that medical strikes in the country come to an end.
