Some 25 people are set to receive payments as claims from assets belonging to deceased individuals, a government agency has announced.
In the May 9 Gazette Notice, the Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority (UFAA) clarified the payments would only be made in the absence of any further objections to the claims that have been lodge by the listed beneficiaries.
"Notice is issued pursuant to Regulation 12 of the Unclaimed Financial Assets Regulations, 2016, that the Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority has received claims for unclaimed assets from the following persons claiming as administrators of the estates of deceased persons and agents of the original owners," the notice read.
"Further take notice that if no objection has been lodged at the offices of the Authority at the address below within thirty (30) days of the date of publication of this notice, payment will be made to the aforementioned persons."
Besides individuals, those listed to receive these payments are private and government agencies, including the DCC of Muranga East sub-county, DCC Juja, DCC Nyahururu and DCC Njoro, as well as Public Trustees in Nairobi, Embu, and Machakos.
For the most part, the holders of these assets are local banks and large corporations.
The UFAA also listed seven more individuals who have filed claims with the authority but have lost their original policy documents. These ones too, the agency said, will receive their payments in 30 days, if no complaints are filed.
"Notice is issued pursuant to Regulation 9 of the Unclaimed Financial Assets Regulations, 2016, that the Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority has received claims for unclaimed assets from the following persons who, through sworn affidavits, have indicated that the original policy documents have been lost," the notice read.
"Further notice is given that unless objection to the claims is lodged at the offices of the Authority at the address below within thirty (30) days from the date hereof, payment will be made to the aforementioned persons on the evidence of the sworn affidavit for lost original policy document and any liability on the lost policy document will immediately cease."
There were no agencies listed as beneficiaries in this category, and all the holders of these claims are popular insurance companies.
The authority has often carried out campaigns, urging Kenyans to reclaim their assets, which sometimes run into billions.
According to the Unclaimed Financial Assets Act (No. 40 of 2011), one has to file a claim, which will be considered within 90 days of the date filed. The unclaimed financial assets must be abandoned for more than two years before one claims them. One can also visit the agency's offices at Pacis Centre, 2nd Floor, off Waiyaki Way, and make their claims.
