Expreso Sacco has broken its silence after one of its matatus overturned and injured passengers on Sunday, May 11.

The vehicle, popularly known as "Upper Cut", was caught on video being recklessly driven before it eventually lost control and crashed, leaving several passengers with injuries.

A day after the incident, the Sacco confirmed that one staff member lost his life as a result of the accident, while four others were in critical condition.

"Expreso Ltd deeply regrets to confirm that a tragic road accident involving one of our vehicles occurred on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at Jua Kali in Tetu, Nyeri County," the statement read.

"It is with great sorrow that we announce the untimely death of our staff member in the incident, and several others sustained injuries, with four reported to be in critical condition. Our sincerest condolences go out to the family of the deceased, and we extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this unfortunate event."

While reiterating the gravity of the accident, the Sacco further revealed that the driver of the ill-fated matatu received a warning letter moments after videos of the PSV being driven recklessly surfaced online.

The matatu has since been impounded at Nyeri Police Station, but the Sacco revealed the driver is on the run, having fled the scene after the vehicle rolled, leaving tens of passengers trapped inside.

According to eyewitnesses, the matatu was earlier seen on Thika Road in Nairobi, carelessly swaying on the major highway, oblivious to the danger posed to those on board. A total of 22 passengers were on board at the time of the incident.

The passengers, according to reports, had booked the minibus, which plies the Kasarani route, for a trip to Zaina Falls in Nyeri County for a weekend getaway.

Following the accident, Sacco also announced that a comprehensive internal review was underway to strengthen safety protocols. It also reiterated its commitment to improving road safety through reinforced driver training.

Incidents of modern PSVs being involved in accidents are all too familiar in recent times, with the latest incident coming just weeks after another matatu belonging to a different Sacco was involved in a spate of incidents, prompting the Transport Licensing Appeals Board (TLAB) tribunal to direct the Sacco to review their drivers before it was allowed to resume operations.

Those orders were part of eight orders issued to the popular sacco on Monday, April 14, hours before it announced that it would be suspending operations for the next three days to adhere to the set conditions.
