Popular matatu sacco Super Metro has been ordered by the Transport Licensing Appeals Board (TLAB) tribunal to sack 269 drivers before it can resume operations. This is part of eight conditions imposed on Super Metro.

"The appellant (Super Metro) shall immediately disengage 269 drivers as per the list marked 'SPM7' annexed to the respondent's replying affidavit sworn on 10th April 2025," part of the orders read. The 269 drivers were found to be unqualified.

These orders are part of eight orders issued to the popular sacco on Monday, April 14, hours before it announced that it would be suspending operations for the next three days to adhere to the set conditions.

In addition to the 269, the sacco has also been ordered to avail 42 drivers with overspeeding violations at the Likoni Driver Test Centre for retesting.

The Sacco was further ordered to present eight identified vehicles with various violations relating to speed limiters for a compliance check at the Likoni Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre.

31 more vehicles with identified compliance inspection issues at the inspection centre are also expected to be presented for reevaluation, and compliance reports submitted to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

The fifth order issued to the matatu Sacco was furnishing the minutes and the attendance list of the Road Safety Sensitisation of all its drivers to the Director of Road Safety of NTSA.

In the meantime, orders issued on March 18 that suspended operations of the Sacco will be reinstated until they reach compliance.

"The appellant shall forthwith cease operations pending further orders upon confirmation of compliance with the terms of the orders herein," the statement read.

The matter will be mentioned on April 17 to confirm compliance and issuance of further directions.

In a statement by Super Metro on Monday, the Sacco suspended their operations for the next three days in anticipation of this and expressed readiness to comply with the orders issued. It also announced that they had so far adhered to 90 per cent of conditions issued during its March suspension.

"Following a hearing with the Transport Licensing Appeals Board today, the Board has directed Super Metro Limited to suspend operations for the next three days to finalise the remaining compliance measures," Super Metro announced.

"Super Metro Limited fully respects the decisions of the TLAB and the court. We are working diligently to address the outstanding compliance issues within the stipulated timeframe and will resume operations as soon as we receive approval from the relevant authorities."
