Residents in Several parts of Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, and Samburu counties are set to experience a two-day temporary disruption of water supply following a major pipeline burst
In a notice on Wednesday, January 7, the Coast Water Works Development Agency revealed that the areas that will be affected include Taru, Samburu, Mariakani, Mazeras, Rabai, and Mombasa West Mainland.
According to the agency, the disruption will pave the way for repair works at the Mzima Water Pipeline, which has burst.
However, the agency did not clarify whether any substitute options such as the use of water bowsers would be made available to guarantee residents continued access to water.
"This is due to the execution of repair works as a result of a pipeline burst that has occurred along the Mzima Water Pipeline. The exercise will take approximately 48 hours," the statement read.
"We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding," it added.
In the recent past, the coastal region, especially Mombasa County, has been experiencing recurrent water shortages due to several factors, including pipe bursting and unlawful water connections.
In a press briefing on Wednesday, August 20, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir said that the country will launch a crackdown and nab individuals facilitating unlawful water connections that have contributed to scarcity in some parts of the county.
Furthermore, the county chief said that the county government will also fix water leakages in addition to drilling more fresh water wells.
The governor added that the county, together with the national government, is pursuing long-term interventions to secure water supply, citing the ongoing Mwache Dam project, which is expected to provide clean water to more than 120,000 households.
"The main reason that the availability of water has gone down is that our non-revenue water is one of the highest in the country, because we have had situations where people have truly been doing nothing else except unlawful water connections, which can be equated to treason," the governor said.
"The county government has already embarked on a massive crackdown targeting these individuals who are making unlawful connections. Changamwe and Mvita constituencies have already started, and part of Kisauni as well," he added.
