Several residents of Simbi Kogembo village and nearby areas in central Karachuonyo, Homa Bay County, have been forced to leave their homes after River Awach Kibuon burst its banks, causing severe flooding.
According to the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), the flooding, which happened early Tuesday, May 13, has displaced over 200 households. The affected families are currently being moved to the Simbi Dispensary for safety.
“This morning, River Kibuon in Central Karachuonyo, Homa Bay County, burst its banks, flooding Simbi Kogembo village and surrounding areas. Evacuation efforts are currently underway, with more than 200 households being relocated to Simbi Dispensary,” KRCS said.
The flooding occurred early this morning, catching many residents off guard, destroying homes, washing away crops, and sweeping away livestock.
This latest incident is part of a larger pattern of flooding in the region. In November 2024, more than 134 families were displaced in Karachuonyo and Suba South constituencies due to heavy rains that also caused rivers to overflow.
Evacuation efforts are still ongoing, with humanitarian organisations working to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected families.
The Kenya Red Cross has been actively responding to the crisis, providing emergency assistance and coordinating evacuation efforts.
On March 16, 2025, over 200 families in Kibiri Ward, Karachuonyo Constituency, were displaced after heavy floods swept through Kojwang sublocation in Katonde, Homa Bay County.
The flooding caused by water from Homa Hills left destruction, washing away farms and livestock from at least 96 families.
The March-May 2025 seasonal forecast indicates that some regions may experience above-average rainfall, increasing the risk of further flooding.
The Kenya Red Cross has stated that its teams are prepared to respond to both drought and flood impacts to support vulnerable communities.
Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to stay alert and follow guidance from local authorities and emergency services.
