Motorists in have been urged to brace for a temporary disruption along the Nairobi Expressway after the government announced a partial closure to allow for maintenance works.
In a notice on Thursday, May 15, Nairobi motorists were notified that a section of the expressway from the overpass at James Gichuru Roundabout to Njuguna's Place on Waiyaki Way would be closed from Friday, May 16, to Monday, May 19.
"Temporary Road Closure of Expressway section from the overpass at James Gichuru Roundabout to Njuguna’s Place will be closed from May 16th at 6 am to May 19th at 8 pm," the notice read.
As a result of the closure, drivers who frequently used the overpass have been advised to seek alternative routes to avoid any inconvenience.
Motorists have also been advised to stay updated through Moja Expressway's official communication channels in case of any changes in the directive and additional guidance.
The closure of the expressway at the overpass is likely to affect motorists who are mainly plying the route from the CBD to areas such as Kinoo, Uthiru, and Kikuyu.
Despite the closure of the overpass, Moja Expressway also confirmed that traffic on the underpass and the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway would not be affected.
Since the overpass typically serves motorists who want to continue along Waiyaki Way to avoid the roundabout below, the partial closure is likely to lead to delays over the weekend as vehicles will be compelled to use the same exit used by motorists connecting with James Gichuru Road from Waiyaki Way.
For motorists heading to the Nairobi CBD using Waiyaki Way, they will also have to share the route with their counterparts seeking to connect with the Red Hill link road.
The Nairobi Expressway, which has been an integral artery in easing traffic to and from the city, regularly undergoes maintenance works to ensure safety and efficiency.
Notably, the closure comes just days after the announcement of a six-hour closure of a section of the Museum Hill road that is linked to the Nairobi Expressway.
Museum Hill Exit A serves as a key access point on the Nairobi Expressway, linking the elevated roadway to central Nairobi locations such as the University of Nairobi, Kijabe Street, and Waiyaki Way.
