The Kenya Meteorological Department has announced continued rainfall across several parts of the country for the next five days, from this Friday through to Tuesday next week.
In its advisory issued on Friday, May 16, the weather department revealed that rains were expected to persist in a few regions, most notably the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley.
In particular, rainfall is expected in the Highland East counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.
According to Kenya Met, the rains in these counties will be moderate and are projected to begin mostly in the afternoons following cloudy morning conditions.
Light rains were also forecasted in the South Eastern lowland counties of Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita-Taveta Counties as well as the inland parts of Tana-River County.
While most of the country was expected to receive generally moderate rains, the meteorological department predicted heavy downpours in the Rift Valley region and parts of the Lake Victoria basin.
Counties within the Rift Valley region and Lake Victoria basin braced to receive heavy downpours included Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, and Uasin-Gishu.
A similar weather pattern was forecasted in the counties of Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori and Narok.
In the advisory, the meteorological department also warned residents living in counties within the Highlands East of the Rift Valley and the Central Rift Valley regions to brace for very cold nights with temperatures below 10°C.
Counties in these regions include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori and Narok.
Similarly, those living in the Coast and North-eastern regions were urged to prepare for abnormally high daytime temperatures for the next five days.
According to Kenya Met, these counties include Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo would experience very high daytime temperatures of above 32°C.
