Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has spoken for the first time after he was released from police custody on Monday, May 19.

The outspoken lawmaker's torrid few days ended with a release on bond, days after he was apprehended along the Isiolo-Nanyuki Highway.

Moments after his release, a visibly shaken Salasya faulted the government and authorities for the manner in which he was apprehended, claiming he was 'arrested like a robber'.

"First of all, I want to condemn the incident because if they are government officers, there should be a procedure for arresting an officer guarded by other officers," he said.

On Friday, May 16, Salasya, through his official X account, detailed his arrest through videos where he alleged individuals claiming to be from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations were pursuing him.

According to the MP, the highway chase culminated in gunfire aimed at his convoy before he was finally nabbed.

While speaking to the media on Monday, moments after his release, Salasya was adamant his arrest was dangerous since his security detail was also armed at the time shots were allegedly fired at him on Friday.

"It can turn out to be dangerous because one can think these are not genuine police officers. It can easily turn into something else. They came on Friday and decided to shoot our car. It is by the grace of God that we are alive today," he went on.

"I want to ask the Director of Criminal Investigations to always communicate to your officers and give them genuine reasons they are arresting the person, because I was arrested like a robber when it was only for propaganda."

On the charges of spreading propaganda and inciteful remarks, Salasya denied any wrongdoing, saying that there were many pseudo accounts under his name on social media which can be easily mistaken for the MP.

The ODPP released a statement on Monday, confirming Salasya was charged with hate speech contrary to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission Act.

After pleading not guilty, the MP was freed on Ksh 200,000 cash bail or a surety bond of Ksh400,000.
