Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has announced mass job opportunities for boda boda operators in Dubai, offering a tax-free salary of between Ksh80,000 and Ksh120,000.
In a statement on Friday, May 23, Mutua said the opportunities were open to individuals from the Coastal region, with several companies from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) set to conduct interviews.
Boda boda operators were invited to apply for the 2,000 available positions, which promise a tax-free salary among other benefits. Additional opportunities are available for construction helpers and gardeners.
In addition to the lucrative salary, boda boda riders, also referred to as delivery riders, were assured of medical insurance and accommodation in the Gulf nation. The maximum age for interested applicants was set at 38.
For the gardeners, salary was set at Ksh31,000 to Ksh45,000 per month, with medical insurance, accommodation, and food provided. Construction helpers would get Ksh35,000 with medical insurance, accommodation, and food provided.
Requirements for the motorcycle riders were a motorcycle rider license or a normal driving license, and a passport or proof of passport application. For the gardeners and helpers, they were required to have a passport or proof of a passport application.
In terms of dress code, CS Mutua advised applicants to dress professionally, emphasising the need to wear closed shoes.
“Look smart and professional. Shabby, unclean, or poorly dressed individuals will not be considered,” Mutua stated.
The interviews are scheduled to take place over four days, from Monday, May 26 to Thursday, May 29, across Malindi, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale.
On Monday, May 26, interviews will be conducted in Malindi at Butwani Waterfront Park, Silversand, Museum Road, Malindi Town. On the following day, interviews will be held at Karisa Maitha Stadium, Kilifi.
On Wednesday, May 28, interviews will take place in Mombasa at Mama Ngina Drive. The final day, Thursday, May 29, will see interviews conducted at Diani Showground in Kwale.
The CS also noted that the interviews would be conducted on a “first-come, first-served basis,” urging applicants to arrive early and well-prepared.
Officials from the Youth Fund will be present to offer funding support for air tickets, medical expenses, service fees, and attestations. Additionally, officials from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) are expected to be on-site for quality assurance and the licensing of motorcycle riders.
Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officials are also expected to be on hand for processing Certificates of Good Conduct. Labour Ministry officials will also be available for overall management of the recruitment process.
