Kenyan Premier League clubs have been cautioned against engaging in unauthorised advertising with third-party organisations.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF), in a statement on Thursday, May 29, raised alarm over the unlawful practice, urging clubs to follow the stipulated guidelines.
“It has come to the attention of the Federation that certain clubs have entered into agreements with third parties, particularly via pitchside banners and LED panels during FKF Premier League matches,” the statement read.
FKF noted that some of the advertisements featured brands or entities that were not recognised commercial partners of the Federation and the Premier League.
“Any engagement concerning the league’s commercial properties, including but not limited to matchday advertising, must be done through the Federation,” FKF stated.
By the League being solely owned, managed and operated by the Federation, all activities ranging from commercial, operational and sporting are to be managed by FKF.
Consequently, the Federation announced that only advertising provided for under existing contracts with it or those approved by the Federation would be allowed.
“In light of this, please note that no unauthorised advertising will be permitted in stadiums during FKF Premier League matches,” it stated.
FKF further warned that clubs found in violation of this directive risk facing disciplinary action.
The federation, headed by Hussein Mohammed, also emphasised that all pitchside advertisements must receive prior approval.
The move is seemingly seen as an effort to protect the League’s commercial integrity and ensure that all sponsorship and advertising revenues are properly regulated and channelled through official agreements.
FKF also urged all stakeholders to cooperate fully and uphold the commercial structure of the League, which is affiliated with CECAFA, CAF, and FIFA.
