The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party have unanimously condemned Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga following his controversial remarks in which he celebrated former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's demise.
Kahiga on Tuesday evening openly claimed that the former Prime Minister's passing was a blessing for the Mt Kenya region, which he alleged had long suffered since the formation of the broad-based government.
The Governor noted that Raila's handshake with President William Ruto disrupted development in the Central Kenya region as the focus shifted in favour of the Nyanza region.
Kahiga's remarks immediately sparked wild reactions from Kenyans, including the political class, with several leaders coming out to condemn Governor Kahiga.
Following the scathing remarks, the ODM party is now demanding Kahiga's immediate resignation as vice chairperson of the Council of Governors.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, ODM party Chairperson, Gladys Wanga, hit out at his Nyeri Counterpart, terming his sentiments primitive, insensitive and insulting.
"Kahiga must immediately resign as vice chairman of the Council of Governors. We all have a duty to call out Kahiga and demand that he appreciates that Kenya belongs to all," Wanga said.
"As Kahiga’s colleague, I am ashamed of his words. I am offended as chairperson of ODM and a believer in Raila Odinga and what he bequeathed our country. I take serious offence at Kahiga's outbursts," she added.
Wanga went ahead to challenge Kenyans from all walks to stand against what she described as tribal chauvinism.
Likewise, the UDA party led by its Chairperson, Cecily Mbarire, castigated Kahiga, who is a member of the party, demanding an immediate apology from the Governor.
While terming Kahiga's sentiments as reckless and insensitive, Mbarire made it clear that Kahiga's statement did not in any way reflect the views of the Mount Kenya region.
"Baba was a true champion of devolution, a visionary who believed in empowering counties and strengthening governance. On this, we stand united," Mbarire stated.
"I therefore demand that Governor Kahiga issue a public apology immediately. As leaders, we must rise above petty divisions and lead with empathy, respect, and a spirit of unity, especially in times when our nation seeks healing," she added.
