Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga has pointed an accusing finger at Mathria MP Eric Wamumbi over the chaos that was witnessed on Tuesday, May 20, between supporters of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and a rival faction.

Kahiga was critical of Wambumbi, whom he accused of fanning the flames of otherwise peaceful demonstrations by supporters of Gachagua.

Amid rising political tensions, Kahiga condemned the chaos, blaming the unrest squarely on local political leadership.

“I condemn what was happening in Karatina, and I specifically blame the current MP of Mathira,” Kahiga said. “The people of Mathira were peaceful, and they should be allowed to express themselves because it is a constitutional right.”

The governor further drew contrast between Karatina and neighbouring areas such as Othaya, which also held similar demonstrations, albeit peacefully.

Chaos in Karatina erupted after supporters of Gachagua organised protests over what they claimed was political persecution of the former Deputy President.

Despite protests initially starting peacefully, things took a turn for the worst after a rival group also took to the streets, disrupting businesses and causing tension in Mathira constituency.

The governor drew a sharp contrast between Karatina and neighbouring areas such as Mukurweini and Othaya, which he said remained peaceful during the same period.

"I don't think that is the right way,” he added. “I want to ask the MP: if the people of Karatina want to demonstrate, let them. But if you bring confrontations, we end up hurting people, which I don't think is the way we want to take Nyeri.”

The protests initially stemmed from a dramatic press conference from Gachagua, who sensationally claimed there was a plot to end his life. The former DP's remarks have since sparked political tension, particularly in the Mount Kenya region.

Governor Kahiga also cautioned leaders against using political events and alleged persecution narratives to score political points among the electorate.

“When we think about this empowerment programme that is being done, if they think that it is giving them political mileage, I am telling you, it will get worse,” Kahiga warned.

Wamumbi is a well-known ally of the Kenya Kwanza government and has consistently been open about his affiliations, despite being based in Gachagua's backyard.

His strong defence of the government has earned him a fair share of criticism in the Mount Kenya region, with a recent funeral in Kirinyaga County culminating in chaos after Gachagua supporters disrupted Wamumbi's speech.
