Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has advised visitors to Amboseli National Park to use an alternative route due to heavy traffic on the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.
The traffic jam was caused by a serious accident that happened on May 30, near the Jet Inn area, between Emali and Masimba.
In a statement released on Friday, May 30, KWS asked tourists to avoid delays by using the Meshanani Gate via the Kitengela–Namanga Road instead.
“To all our esteemed visitors heading to Amboseli National Park, please note that due to traffic congestion along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway, we recommend using the Meshanani Gate via Kitengela–Namanga Road as an alternative access route," KWS said.
"Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we strive to ensure you have a smooth and memorable safari experience,” the statement reads.
According to police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the accident happened on Friday morning when three trailers collided on a railway bridge, completely blocking the road. Vehicles in both directions were unable to pass.
Reports confirm that one person died in the accident, and a driver was seriously injured.
KWS has urged all visitors to plan ahead and use the alternative gate to avoid delays and ensure a better experience as they travel to the park.
"The police service wishes to notify the public of a serious traffic gridlock between Emali and Masimba along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway," said Nyaga.
"This disruption follows a fatal road traffic accident at Jet Inn area involving three trailers that collided on a railway bridge, completely blocking the road," he added.
Motorists using the route were urged to follow the traffic regulations, with Nyaga adding that they would take stern action against those found flouting traffic rules.
The motorists who plan to use the section of highway were told to seek alternative routes as the officers continue to ease traffic flow along the stretch.
