Just a day after the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) opened its application portal for Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) students, the board has released directions on how to go about the process.
In a statement dated June 19, HELB announced that the scheme would cover the tuition fees and was only open for certificate and diploma students at the institution.
“The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has partnered with the Higher Education Loans Board to set up the KMTC Students Financing Scheme to offer financing to students pursuing medical courses at KMTC. The scheme will cater for tuition fees,” the statement read.
The fund, therefore, outlined how both first-time applicants and subsequent loan applicants could access these loans after a full financial year of being cut off as beneficiaries.
For First-time Applicants:
- First, visit the HELB official website, www.hef.co.ke, to access the student portal for registration. Once there, create and activate the account, ensuring that you use your personal mobile number registered under your name and national ID number.
- Then, input your national ID number and a valid email address, and create a password before clicking register.
- After creating the account, verify it through the activation link sent to either your email's Inbox or Spam/Junk folder.
- Log in to the portal and complete your profile under My Profile, filling in sections regarding Personal information, Residence, Education, Institution, and Parents. Upload all necessary documents at this stage.
- To apply for the loan, click on the HELB menu and under the Loan Application Tab, select the KMTC Student Financing Scheme.
- Then review and consent to the personal data collection as outlined in the consent form, accepting the loan terms and conditions.

- Fill in your guarantor's details as requested.
- With all required information provided, submit your completed application form.
- A PDF version of the application will be sent to the email address you provided. No need to print a hard copy of this.
- You will be enabled to track the status of your application on your HELB student portal.
For beneficiaries applying for a second or subsequent loan:
- Download the HELB App from the Google Play Store or use the USSD Code *642#. Upgrade the app if it is already downloaded.
- Then, register using your phone number to generate a One Time PIN, which you will use to log in. Ensure the mobile number is registered under your name.
- After that, read, understand, and click to accept the license agreement.
- To apply for the loan, click on the loans tab and choose Certificate/Diploma. Then click apply on the KMTC subsequent loan.
- Read and understand the process tutorial and proceed to read the financial literacy guide.
- Click on get started to start the application process.
- Then enter your phone number, which should be registered in your name and your national ID number to verify that you are the owner of that number.
- Once again, read and understand the loan terms and conditions and agree to proceed.
- Answer the financial literacy questions and scroll down to view results, and click proceed.
- Then, click Request Loan to view and verify your loan details.
- Lastly, click submit to complete the loan application, after which a pop-up message will appear to show that you have successfully applied. The loan serial number will also be displayed.
The HELB portal will be open until June 24, and afterwards, applicants will receive other notifications on awards and disbursements of the loan.
