The Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB) has announced that it will conduct a compliance assessment on practitioners in nine counties in the next two months.
In a notice on Thursday, June 19, KVB said that it will deploy two compliance assessment teams who will conduct a door-to-door evaluation of the practitioners between the months of June and July.
The first team, according to the notice, will survey Turkana, West Pokot, and Trans Nzoia Counties, while the second team will conduct the assessment in Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Baringo, Marsabit, and Isiolo Counties.
During the assessment, veterinary practitioners in these counties will be required to display a valid 2025 practice license, retention card, and a Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) licence.
Additionally, the practitioners will be required to have a lockable cabinet for prescription-only medicines (POMs) and a prescription file.
"All practitioners are requested to comply in time to avoid any inconvenience. All payments are done through E-citizen as provided in detail on our website. For more information, kindly reach out to us," the board stated.
In a statement two months ago, on Tuesday, April 22, the board had cautioned the public against the employment of unlicensed veterinary surgeons or veterinary paraprofessional doctors, spotlighting that the employment of such individuals contravenes the law.
According to KVB, anyone caught employing an unlicensed veterinary doctor risks facing a fine not exceeding Ksh100,000 or imprisonment for at least one year or both.
The board said any individual whose name does not appear in its register after March 31 every year is deemed to be unregistered under the Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Paraprofessionals Act.
KVB further cautioned the public against practising as veterinary doctors unless they have the necessary government approval.
"No person shall practice or hold himself out, whether directly or indirectly, as practising or being able to practice as a veterinary surgeon or veterinary paraprofessional or take up employment as such unless he is registered and licensed," the notice by KVB stated.
