The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has issued a stern warning to Kenyans after uncovering a fraud syndicate involving individuals falsely claiming to be the company’s Managing Director and CEO.
In an official statement, KETRACO identified the phone numbers, landlines, and email addresses that the scammers have been using to impersonate the company's top executive leadership and defraud tenderers and job seekers.
The company has urged the public to exercise extreme caution when dealing with individuals purporting to represent its senior leadership.
“We believe this misrepresentation is for malicious purposes. We strongly advise the public to exercise extreme caution and be vigilant against such fraudulent schemes,” KETRACO warned in the statement.
The impersonation appears to be part of a broader scheme targeting public tenders and unsuspecting stakeholders. KETRACO emphasised that it would not be held liable for any losses or damages incurred by individuals who fall victim to the scam.
“For official communication and to verify any tender or vacancy at KETRACO, please contact us through our official channels,” KETRACO warned.
The warning to stakeholders stressed the importance of scrutiny and safety practices when applying for or seeking tenders.
KETRACO is currently rolling out major infrastructure projects across the country. These tenders focus on expanding and upgrading Kenya’s high-voltage electricity transmission network, including substations, transmission lines, and supporting infrastructure.
The warning comes at a time when KETRACO has five open tenders inviting relevant and interested stakeholders.
Currently, KETRACO has invited bidders for the Kabarnet & Rumuruti Substations Extension (LOT 5), Suswa Substation Firebreak & Watch Towers, and Kabarnet–Rumuruti 132kV Transmission Line.
Others include the Kimuka 400/220kV Substation & Transmission Lines, as well as STATCOMs and Shunt Devices at the Suswa and Rabai Substations.
Members of the public have been encouraged to report any suspicious communication or fraudulent activity to KETRACO or the relevant law enforcement agencies.
The company has also pledged to fully cooperate with the authorities to investigate and prosecute those behind the scam.
