Protesters Block Nyeri-Karatina Road
Transport has been brought to a standstill along the busy Nyeri-Karatina highway as protests broke out in Nyeri town and other parts of the county.
The demonstrations are part of ongoing protests in which Kenyans are raising issues such as police brutality, economic hardship and social injustice, and commemorating those who died during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.
According to a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the protesters blocked the road using large stones and burning tyres.
As tensions escalated, businesses in the town were forced to close due to safety concerns.
Nyeri-Karatina highway is not the only major road in the country experiencing disruptions due to the ongoing protests in the country.
On Thika Superhighway, demonstrators blocked the road using stones and tyres making travel impossible as police resorted to using teargas to disperse them.
The Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association has also warned motorists to steer clear of several areas.
In the timely alert, the association urged drivers to avoid Makindu Road, Gilgil, and Emali, labelling them “no‑go zones” after demonstrators allegedly closed those routes.
In Nairobi, the police closed roads and imposed traffic diversions to restrict movement towards protest hotspots within the city.
By 7am on Wednesday, the police had set up razor wire and deployed anti-riot officers along major roads in an attempt to prevent crowds from reaching important government buildings and to maintain order.
As the situation evolves, commuters are being urged to plan, use alternative routes, or postpone travel if possible.
Among the roads affected in Nairobi are Jogoo Road, Ngong Road, Limuru Road, Kiambu Road, and Mombasa Road.
