The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has asked media stations to ignore the Communication Authority of Kenya's (CA) orders.

This statement comes after CA directed all television and radio stations to stop live coverage of the ongoing demonstrations countrywide.

The CA warned all the media stations that failure to which will result in regulatory action as stated in the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998.

"This is therefore to direct all television and radio stations to stop any live coverage of the demonstrations forthwith. Failure to abide by this directive will result in regulatory action as stipulated in the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998," CA stated.

"The live coverage of the June 25th, 2025, demonstrations is contrary to Articles 33(2) and 34(1) of the Constitution of Kenya and Section 461 of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998," CA added.

In a statement on Wednesday, June 25, KHRC stated that the CA's directive is unconstitutional.

“KHRC calls on media houses to ignore this unconstitutional directive by the Communications Authority of Kenya," the statement reads.

According to the commission, the directive is also meant to conceal police violence during the protest.

The commission urged all protesters to document and share any instances of police brutality online so that the perpetrators are held accountable.

“The regime’s move to block live coverage of the Justice for Mashujaa protest is a deliberate attempt to conceal police violence, which is getting worse, as witnessed by KHRC.”

"We also encourage all protesters to document and share any instances of police brutality online, so that the abusers are held to account,” the commission added.

Several media houses had already been broadcasting live images and videos from different parts of the country, including scenes of heavy police presence and large crowds of protesters.
