Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has urged lawyers to provide legal services to help secure the release of everyone who was arrested during the June 25 protests.
In her statement on Thursday, June 26, Maina called on young lawyers to provide assistance by offering sustained legal representation and ensure that the detained are released today.
According to Maina, there are hundreds of young people in detention across the 27 counties.
Those arrested were among the crowds who took to the streets to protest against police brutality and commemorate those who lost their lives during last year's anti-Finance Bill protests.
She added that everyone has a right and responsibility to fight against such unfair arrest of young people whose rights may be at risk.
“I’m calling on all young lawyers to offer pro-Bono legal services to secure their release today and provide legal representation for the long haul. We must do our civic duty in this war against impunity,” she said.
Maina asked lawyers to stay involved and defend every protester's case in court in the long term until their release.
Additionally, she warned that without any legal help, many of the young detainees might stay in jail for a long time.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has confirmed that 61 protesters were arrested yesterday across the country.
IPOA also condemned the police for using force during the protest, stating that it had launched an investigation into areas where cases of brutality were reported, adding that it had made enquiries into various concerns.
“Per Section 6(c) of the IPOA Act, the Authority this morning, 25th June 2025, launched monitoring operations nationwide, deploying its officers to observe and monitor the conduct of the National Police Service in managing public order during ongoing demonstrations to commemorate the 2024 Finance Bill protests,” IPOA stated.
