A senior police officer was among two people who died in a road accident that occurred on Saturday evening at the Maduro area along the Narok–Mai Mahiu Road.
Eyewitnesses reported that the crash happened when a long-distance trailer lost control and rammed into two private vehicles—a Toyota Prado TX and a Toyota G-Touring. They claimed the trailer’s brakes failed, leading to the deadly collision on the busy highway.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals by first responders, including Sikika Road Safety, a motorists' safety advocacy group that was among the first to raise the alarm over the crash.
The trailer collided head-on with a Toyota Prado driven by Chief Inspector George Rotich Kipchumba, a senior officer at Narok Traffic Base.
Earlier, concerns had mounted over the slow emergency response, as the accident happened late at night in a remote location, far from the nearest response units.
The crash led to a major traffic snarl-up in the area, with other motorists forced to stop and help the injured access medical care.
Images and videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed a Toyota Prado badly wrecked, having been shoved off the lane, with its passenger side completely shattered.
Fortunately, after the alarm was raised, Sikika confirmed that the Narok County Government responded by deploying emergency services to the scene.
The long, winding stretch from Narok Town to Nairobi has become notorious for major road accidents that have claimed numerous lives over the years.
In the latest tragedy, a police report confirmed that eight people died in two separate crashes at the SGR Section 5 near Duka Moja on the Narok–Mai Mahiu Road, involving six vehicles and a motorcycle on December 23, last year.
The first crash occurred when a trailer heading towards Mai Mahiu suffered a tyre burst, causing it to crash into a Toyota Premio, a bus, and a matatu. Three passengers aboard the matatu died on the spot.
Moments later, another trailer approaching the same scene at high speed collided with a Prado, killing two occupants instantly, while a third died later in the hospital.
The second trailer also struck a motorcycle, killing two pillion passengers. All the deceased and injured were taken to the Narok County Referral Hospital.
