A public uproar has erupted after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported the recovery of an AK-47 rifle stolen from the Dagoretti Police Station during the June 25 protests.

In its report, DCI claimed that officers from the Kabete Police Station received a tip-off about a suspicious individual carrying a bulging bag at a bar in the Gahui area.

Without delving into the details of the steps that followed, DCI claimed that the officers applied forensic leads and identified the suspect.

This identification reportedly led the officers to the suspect's residence in the Njuki-Kirigu area to arrest him, but he "vanished without a trace."

A thorough search was subsequently carried out in the presence of the suspect's mother, during which the rifle was unearthed alongside an empty magazine and a single round of 7.62mm special ammunition.

DCI further shared the images of the recovered items, noting that a manhunt is underway for the recovery of the suspect.

This report did not satisfy many Kenyans online, who noted the lack of intricate details, as is the norm in similar DCI reports, especially those where police officers are the victims.

Others noted the lack of identification of the suspect, even though prior reports often involve the picture, the names and even the identification cards of suspects.

"Always, the DCI lines up persons whom they have arrested as suspects of such serious crimes. Where are the suspects who were arrested with these firearms?" one quipped

"Who led the officers to the house, and who fled? Am confused," another added.

While addressing the nation on June 26, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stated that five guns were stolen from the Dagoretti Police Post in Kiambu County, while four were burnt at the Gachui Police Post.

Several Kenyans are suspected of looting other properties during the protests.
