Opposition leaders have called for the immediate resignation of Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, or he faces impeachment over his recent controversial shoot-to-kill order.
Speaking in Githurai after visiting the family of slain hawker Boniface Kariuki, the leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa, asserted that Murkomen's latest shoot-to-kill order warrants him to either resign immediately or be removed from the Ministry.
"Mr Murkomen, the least you can do as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior is to resign immediately. We fully support the impeachment motion being brought against you, and we urge all opposition Members of Parliament to back it without hesitation," Wamalwa stated.
According to Wamalwa, such remarks and the recent events that have been unfolding in the country lately warrant abuse of office and endangering the lives of citizens. Wamalwa's sentiments echo those of his colleague, Kalonzo Musyoka, who condemned Murkomen.
''We want to ask President Ruto and CS Murkomen, is this the good job you have been talking about? Shooting youths and killing them aimlessly—is this what you are calling a good job?'' Wamalwa continued.
The impeachment motion is reportedly being prepared by lawmakers angered by Murkomen's public comments during a tour of Nairobi's CBD in the aftermath of the June 25 protests, which resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.
In the controversial statements, Murkomen directed police officers to shoot and kill any individual who approaches a police station to steal from it.
"Anyone approaching a police station, shoot them; a gun is not a toy," Murkomen said.
Following these sentiments, several MPs drawn from former DP Rigathi Gachagua's Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) revealed plans to initiate an impeachment motion against Murkomen, plans that Wamalwa has fully supported.
“This Parliament must stand firm. The Interior Cabinet Secretary has overstepped his mandate by issuing unconstitutional directives that endanger lives. We cannot sit back and watch,” Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji said on Sunday, sentiments that were backed by more MPs from the camp.
Although the motion is yet to be tabled, pressure continues to mount from opposition leaders who have vowed to ensure that Murkomen is held accountable over his statements.
The Interior CS has been put on the spot as cases of forced disappearances, police brutality, and insecurity continue to increase in the country.
