An Administration Police officer is in custody after residents stormed a police station in Archers Post, Isiolo County, to demand his arrest.
In a statement on Saturday, July 5, the Counter Terrorism Police Unit reported that the officer had been driving a vehicle owned by the AP's Border Patrol Unit when he accidentally hit a woman in the town centre.
The vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser, has since been detained at the Archers Post Police Station.
"Police officers at Archers Police Station detained a motor vehicle owned by the Administration Police's Border Patrol Unit (BPU) that caused an accident at Archers Post Town," the statement read.
"The vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by an AP officer, accidentally hit a lady in the busy Archers Post Town Centre. The driver is in custody."
On Saturday, reports broke that a woman had been killed in a road accident at Archer’s Post town by a speeding vehicle the locals suspected to belong to the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
After the driver surrendered to the police station, the angry residents stormed it, leading to reports of gunfire in the area.
The woman's body was then taken to the Isiolo Mortuary as the community continues to call for justice.
This comes just days after four police officers died following a tragic road accident that occurred on the evening of June 22, along the Garissa Highway.
The officers were travelling in a police vehicle that reportedly lost control and rolled several times.
Reportedly, six officers were on board at the time of the crash, with witnesses indicating that the vehicle was allegedly speeding when the driver lost control, leading to the fatal rollover.
The four died on the spot, and the two who survived sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
