The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has urged registered voters to verify their details ahead of the 2027 General Elections after upgrading the system.

In a notice on July 8, the commission revealed that the voter verification portal downtime, which was reported on June 6, had already lapsed, and Kenyans could go ahead and utilise the updated system.

“The Voter Verification Portal is back up and running! We appreciate your patience during the maintenance period. Check your voter details now: verify.iebc.or.ke.

On July 6, IEBC sparked discussions online after announcing that it would be migrating its systems to a new digital infrastructure barely two years before the elections.

At the time, the commission did not reveal how long the said migration could take or when Kenyans would be able to access the site again.

Kenyans also raised concerns over the legitimacy of the migration, as the commission remains unoccupied, leading to speculations on who had green-lighted the migration.

However, IEBC claimed that the system update was a "part of the ongoing migration to new infrastructure aimed at enhancing service delivery through system performance and security."

The unsigned notice then assured Kenyans that the registration details of the 22,120,458 registered voters, as recorded during the 2022 General Election, would remain intact and secure.

Following the notice, Kenyans shared screenshots of an alert they received after trying to verify their details. Although some confirmed their details were intact, others reported discrepancies.

Once, such a voter who received a notification reading that their year of birth did not match the one registered lamented, "No, really. You better tell us what this means!"

Another one claiming to have voted for the past 20 years at the same station wanted to know what they had done to the register after receiving a notification reading, "Voter with ID or passport number provided is not found; if registered, visit your IEBC constituency office."

In a more bizarre situation, another made an unverified claim that a friend of his from Malindi, who had never registered as a voter, found their name on the register as a registered voter in Nakuru.

However, several others confirmed that their details were intact, promising to vote in the 2027 General Elections, come what may.

One is expected to input their national identification number and birth year to verify whether their details are correct.
