Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended a 38-year-old car robbery suspect in Makueni.

According to a statement by DCI, the man was the mastermind of a highway ambush that left one motorist badly injured and his vehicle stolen.

The victim had been driving from Mombasa to Malaba when he offered a ride to two hitchhikers at Mariakani.

After arriving at Kiunduani Market, one of the passengers requested to alight the vehicle leading the driver to slow down to let him off.

It was at this point that two assailants jumped outside a nearby thicket and  attacked him with a blunt object, then vanished with the car and his bag of belongings.

The driver was then rushed to and treated at the Makindu Sub County Hospital and subsequently discharged in stable condition.

DCI claimed that forensic leads and tactical pursuit, led them to track the stolen vehicle to Ukia in Makueni Sub-County, where they ultimately arrested the suspect.

However, his accomplices managed to flee the scene but left behind crucial leads.

During the arrest, the authorities seized several other items, including a getaway motorcycle and two sets of number plates, one of which had previously been stolen from a parked motorvehicle. A pair of screwdrivers was also recovered.

The suspect is currently in police custody awaiting arraignment as police officers the rest of the crew behind continue the manhunt for the apprehension of the rest of the heist crew.

Motorists have for a long time been victimised by highway robbers with the most recent arrest being of three suspected highway robbers in an impromptu operation in April.

Consisting of two males aged 36 and 40, and a 32-year-old female, the three had been evading police efforts for several weeks before their arrest after terrorising motorists along the busy Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.
