Six individuals have been arrested in connection with the killing of a police constable along the busy Thika-Garissa Road, Kiambu County in June.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced a breakthrough in the case on Monday, July 21, revealing that the six suspects were tracked down thanks to forensic evidence.
In a statement, the DCI disclosed that the suspects were tracked down to a hideout in Kahawa West in Nairobi.
Besides the arrest of the suspects in a carefully-coordinated operation, the DCI also seized a vehicle believed to have been used by the suspects during the crime.
Five of the suspects were arrested in Kahawa West, while a sixth suspect was tracked down in the Kiamumbi area, Kiambu County, during a follow-up operation, according to detectives.
All six suspects were arraigned at the Thika Law Courts, where detectives were allowed to detain the suspects for a further 21 days as investigations continue.
The arrests came more than a month after Police Constable Bernard Koome was killed while conducting a routine patrol in the Cravers area of Thika West in Kiambu County.
In the initial police report, Koome and another police officer spotted a suspicious motorcycle, prompting them to investigate. As they approached the bike, the rider seemingly panicked and fled on foot while opening fire in the process.
Koome was rushed to hospital following the shooting, but he died from his injuries, one of which was to the neck.
Meanwhile, at the scene, police recovered two spent 9mm cartridges and a CZ pistol magazine loaded with four rounds of ammunition. These items were crucial in tracking down and apprehending the key suspects in the shooting.
The case involving the six suspects is set for mention on August 11.
In a separate incident, investigations are underway following the mysterious death of a police officer whose body was found dumped by the roadside in Rarieda, Siaya County.
According to an official report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke., the lifeless body of the police constable was discovered along the Ndori–Luanda Kotieno Road, near Rarieda Secondary School.
