Wambui Nyutu has been dismissed as the Vice Chairperson of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) over alleged continued involvement in partisan political activities.

NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia confirmed Nyutu's dismissal on Tuesday, July 22, following a Special Commission Meeting held on July 22, 2025, to discuss her conduct.

According to Kobia, Nyutu had violated both her oath of office and the Law by involving herself with political figures, despite her position.

“The Commission unanimously resolved to relieve Ms. Nyutu of her role as Vice Chairperson of the Commission with immediate effect,” Kobia said in a statement.

There were initial signs that Nyutu would land in trouble earlier in the year, as the NCIC had convened three previous meetings to discuss the outgoing vice chair's conduct.

The meetings were convened following public remarks made by Nyutu and her political affiliations, which the NCIC considered politically partisan.

The commission further revealed that Nyutu had initially apologised and promised to refrain from any political activity. This pledge, however, appears to have been broken over time.

“At its meeting on 22nd July, 2025, the Commission noted with deep concern that Ms. Wambui Nyutu has since been involved in partisan political activities, including participation in meetings affiliated with a particular political party,” Kobia said in the meeting.

Following the meeting on Tuesday, the NCIC decided to initiate the process of her removal as the commission's vice chair. This will be achieved by invoking Section 23 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act (CAP 7N), which provides an avenue to oust a commissioner where misconduct can be proven or if there are legal violations.

While the specific instances of Nyutu's violations were not mentioned, the ousted vice chair has on several occasions met up with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

During a church service in May 2025, Nyutu declared that Gachagua was one of the best leaders in the country.

Prior to that, in November 2024, Nyutu had a formal meeting with the former DP at his residence, where she was described as a 'daughter of the mountain'.

Meanwhile, in what was a swift transition from Nyutu's tenure, the commission elected Dorcas Kedogo to replace her, effective immediately.
