Nyandarua Senator John Methu and other allies of the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua were forced to flee for safety on Sunday, July 7, as his convoy was teargassed by police officers, who also fired gunshots to disperse opposition figures in Murang'a County.

Methu was in the county to attend a church service in Kigumo Constituency alongside other allies of Gachagua.

After the service, the leaders were expected to address multiple public rallies in the county, but police mounted a blockade along one of the major highways to stop their movement.

In videos and images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, Methu, alongside other opposition figures, can be seen attempting to negotiate their way through with a commanding officer, who was adamant the convoy had to turn back.

At one point, Methu can be heard asking the officer, ''What have we done? What is the problem with addressing the people?''

The situation eventually escalated to mayhem, as a teargas canister was hurled at Methu as he was engaging the police officer, prompting the Senator and his allies to flee.

Unconfirmed reports also suggested that Methu's convoy was subjected to attacks by unnamed individuals, believed to be hired goons.

''Armed Police officers accompanied by goons have ambushed Leaders allied to DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua immediately after they left AIPCA  Christ The King Church in Kahuro, Kigumo Constituency, Murang'a County,'' a statement from Gachagua's team read.

The statement went on, ''The Police, jointly with goons, blocked the leader's convoy and started throwing teargas and live bullets. They dispersed the crowds and harassed the leaders, saying that they were not allowed to hold a meeting in the area.''

In the aftermath of the fracas, several people were left nursing injuries, while vehicles from Methu's convoy also endured damage, including from bullets.

Notably, this is the second weekend in a row that Methu has seen his envoy blocked by police officers.  On July 20, police set up a roadblock along the Nakuru-Nyahururu highway heading towards Subukia town after catching wind that Gachagua's allies were planning to conduct rallies in Nakuru Town.

Prior to the roadblock drama, the leaders attended a church service at the Subukia AIC, where they went on another tirade against the Kenya Kwanza government.
