The government now says it is on the verge of completing the expansion of Diani Airport in Kwale County, marking a significant step toward unlocking the full potential of the country's coastal region.
Addressing members of the public on Tuesday morning, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo revealed that the airport's new apron, which is crucial for aircraft parking and movement, was 90 per cent complete.
He noted that the new taxiway, which connects to the main runway, was also under construction, with the final stretch expected to be completed within two weeks.
"Once done, the airport's ground handling efficiency will be vastly improved, enabling better management of both domestic and regional air traffic," Omollo said.
Another key component for operational safety and sustainability is the airport's drainage system, which is also slated for completion in the coming weeks.
Notably, the runway, extended by 400 metres last year, is currently fully functional and capable of accommodating larger aircraft at full passenger capacity.
According to the PS, the upgrade has positioned Diani as a key aviation hub, with regular flights which service key tourist destinations such as the Maasai Mara and Amboseli.
"This infrastructure upgrade is a game-changer for the South Coast. It enhances regional connectivity, shortens travel times and strengthens the tourism and trade sectors," the PS revealed.
"For the local economy, the improved airport translates into increased tourist arrivals, more business opportunities and greater access to national and international markets," he added.
The expansion of Diani Airport began in October last year as a transformative project that was aimed at elevating Kwale County as a key hub for trade and tourism.
Kwale’s rich cultural heritage and stunning beaches made Diani a prime destination, and with improved accessibility, the airport would drive economic growth and turn the county into a vibrant economy.
Previously, Diani Airport could only host up to three aircraft at a time, limiting the ability of multiple planes carrying visitors to land at the airport.
