The Kenya Railways Corporation has suspended its Nairobi-Kisumu Safari train, leaving thousands of passengers who use it stranded.
The suspension was revealed by several concerned customers who took to the railway's social media pages to question the sudden change after they had missed the train several times.
Although the corporation did not issue an official communication regarding the suspension, it assured customers that once the train resumes operation, they would be formally informed through a notice.
Kenya Railways did, however, not reveal when the suspension will be lifted.
"The Kisumu Safari train is currently suspended until further notice. Communication shall be made to the public once operations resume," Kenya Railways revealed, in a response to one of its customers.
The corporation also did not reveal why the train had been suspended.
"Good morning, give me a reason why you stopped the Nairobi Kisumu route," a customer had inquired.
The Kisumu safari train makes the trip from Nairobi to Kisumu every Friday with stopovers in Naivasha, Nakuru, Njoro, Molo, Elburgon, Fort Ternan, Londiani, Muhoroni, Chemelil, Kibigori, Miwani and Kibos stations to drop and pick passengers.
The train departs at 6:30pm and arrives the following day in Kisumu at 6:30am.
The return trip is set for every Sunday with the train departing the Kisumu Railway station at 6:30pm to arrive in Nairobi at 06:35am.
This is not the first time the Railway Corporation has suspended the Nairobi-Kisumu Safari Train; the train has been on and off service due to several reasons, including ongoing line rehabilitation, excessive rains, and damaged railway lines, among other reasons.
This is the second time the cooperation has suspended train services in the month. At the beginning of the month, KRC suspended many of its trains, including the 10 pm Madaraka Express passenger train from Mombasa to Nairobi.
Most of the trains were suspended due to the protests, including the Saba Saba Day protests that saw both rail and road transport disrupted in most parts of the country.
