The Senate Speaker, Amason Kingi, has convened a special sitting on Wednesday, August 20, for the hearing of the impeachment charges against the Kericho Governor, Eric Mutai.

In a Gazette notice dated Monday, August 18, Kingi also announced that during the special meeting, the Senators would also witness the swearing-in of nominated Senator Consolata Nabwire.

Nabwire was recently nominated to replace former Senator Gloria Orwoba, who was dismissed for allegedly contravening the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party's regulations and failing to appear for disciplinary hearings.

"I have today, through a gazette notice, invited Senators for a special sitting on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, to hear the charges against Honourable Eric Kipkoech Mutai, Governor of Kericho County," Kingi announced.

"Senators will also witness the swearing-in of Nominated Senator Consolata Nabwire Wakwabubi of the UDA Party," he added.

As per the notice, Kingi disclosed that the special sitting would commence at exactly 2.30pm at the Senate Chamber located at the Parliament Buildings.

According to the Senate Speaker, the lawmakers would proceed to deliberate on Mutai's impeachment case after which the Senate would be adjourned until Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Kingi's move to gazette the special meeting comes days after Kericho Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) impeached Governor Mutai over several issues, including misappropriation of funds.

Mutai was impeached on August 15, after all 33 MCAs voted in favour of the motion to impeach him despite staging a spirited fight to challenge the allegations.

In particular, the Governor was accused of allegedly making a Ksh85 million payment to contractors for work that was never done. However, the Governor denied the allegation.

Mutai, who was impeached for the second time, was also accused of allegedly misappropriating funds collected to help the Londiani accident victims.

His impeachment had initially been halted temporarily by the High Court after two petitioners moved to court to challenge the grounds of impeachment, terming the process as unlawful.
