Political tensions in Isiolo escalated on Wednesday, August 27, after part of the County Assembly Clerk's office was set on fire.

Images and videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed the office in flames, just hours after goons invaded the County Assembly chambers and vandalised property.

At the time of publication, it was unclear whether the same individuals were responsible for setting fire to the County Secretary's office. The extent of the fire damage was also still unknown.

This incident occurred shortly after it was revealed that the embattled Isiolo County Assembly Speaker, Mohamed Roba, had been arrested en route to Nairobi.

Authorities revealed that Roba was picked up by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) along Thika Road and taken to Ruaraka Police Station, ending initial speculation that he had been 'abducted'.

Barely hours after his arrest, on Wednesday morning, a group of unidentified individuals stormed the Assembly chambers in broad daylight, destroying property and rendering the House unable to conduct any proceedings.

The three incidents added fuel to an already volatile political climate in Isiolo, coming just weeks after the County Assembly impeached Governor Abdi Guyo before he was later reinstated by the Senate.

Guyo survived his impeachment after the Senate ruled that the Isiolo County Assembly did not properly convene to debate and vote on the motion seeking his removal from office.

Roba, who was at the heart of an impeachment motion against Guyo, was later moved to Mavoko Law Courts on Wednesday.

A letter by a prosecution counsel Nyaroita Nyokabi dated August 1 wanted the speaker charged with various offenses, including assault of a police officer and malicious damage of property.

The charges stemmed from an incident where authorities tried to recover county cars from him, leading to a physical confrontation.

In the midst of the impeachment motion in June, reports emerged that Roba had resigned from his position - something the Speaker denied on Wednesday, June 18. In the statement, Roba said the claims are fake, have no legal basis, and are only intended to confuse the public.
