Two high schools in Machakos and Makueni counties have experienced dormitory infernos within a day of each other as police launch investigations into the incidents.
On Friday morning, September 12, an inferno broke out at Mbooni Boys High School in Makueni County, destroying a dormitory.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, there were no student injuries, but a large amount of property was destroyed, even as the cause of the inferno is still unknown.
Videos and images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed the dormitory engulfed in smoke, with students watching from a distance as their property went up in flames.
The inferno was, however, contained before it spread to other buildings. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Inferno Incident at Mumbuni Girls
This incident followed an inferno on the evening of September 11 at Mumbuni Girls Secondary School in Machakos.
The blaze, which started at around 6:30pm, destroyed part of a two-storey dormitory, including several beds, mattresses and students' personal belongings.
According to reports, the inferno brigade from Machakos County contained the inferno before it could spread to other parts of the building.
Police officers also arrived promptly to manage the crowd of anxious parents and neighbours who had gathered at the school following the incident.
Machakos Deputy County Commissioner David Rotich confirmed that there were no casualties during the incident.
Rotich added that a few students suffered from shock and were taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment before being discharged and returning to school.
The two incidents in Machakos came after a dormitory at Cheptenye Boys High School in Kericho County was destroyed in a suspicious blaze attack on Thursday afternoon.
The inferno began at around 2pm, in what some people believe could have been a suspicious blaze attack on the dormitory, which houses over 100 students.
The incident occurred while the students were attending their afternoon lessons. No injuries or casualties were reported.
