At least six people were killed while 4 people were injured on Tuesday night in a road accident that occurred at the Kipsitet area of Kericho County along the Kisumu-Kericho highway.

The accident occurred at around 10pm after a speeding lorry lost control and rammed into pedestrians who were waiting to board a vehicle at a bus stop.

According to Sion Sub-County Police Commander Lawrence Kisini, the lorry was ferrying scrap metal from Kericho to Kisumu when the accident occurred.

He revealed that four people succumbed on the spot while two others died while being rushed to the hospital. Four others sustained serious injuries.

The injured were admitted to the Kericho County Hospital. Meanwhile, the deceased were taken to the mortuary in the same facility.

Videos and images of the accident, widely shared online, showed the white lorry leaning on its side with damage to the windscreen and the doors.

Police officers arrived at the scene of the accident and cordoned off the area, with investigations currently underway to establish the main cause of the crash.

The accident resulted in a huge traffic snarl-up along the busy highway, even as motorists struggled to navigate through the scene of the crash, with some forced to seek alternative routes.

The Kipsitet crash adds to the number of accidents witnessed across the country in the past week. Just a day before, at least four people died in an accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The accident took place in the Kalimbini area near Sultan Hamud when a lorry lost control and rammed into an oncoming car, instantly killing four people who were inside the car.

Footage obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed the private vehicle extensively damaged, while the lorry sustained minor damage to the driver's cabin.

Moments later, police officers, jointly with rescue teams, arrived at the scene to help in retrieving the bodies that had been trapped inside the wreckage before the officers cleared the road.
