Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has warned politicians against misusing and misunderstanding the broad-based agreement reached between the ODM party and President William Ruto's UDA party.
Sifuna called out politicians, particularly those aligned to President Ruto's administration, for casually invoking the term 'broad-based' without understanding its meaning and what it stands for.
Speaking on Thursday, October 30, the lawmaker maintained that the term 'broad-based' was not a mere slogan but an agreement built on a ten-point agenda.
Sifuna insisted that the agreement signed in March this year was a legitimate deal, adding that politicians were merely exploiting the term to further their own agendas.
"It has become fashionable for people to throw around this thing. Every single discussion that comes up, 'we are Broad-based'. I want to remind them that broad-based is built on a 10-point agenda," Sifuna stated.
The ODM party Secretary General warned politicians against distorting the term and challenged leaders to implement the agreement rather than exploit it for personal gain.
"When you run around with this thing, always remember that there's an agreement there that is the underpinning of that relationship, and if you do not do what that agreement is saying the you can not run around saying you are broad-based," the Senator insisted.
"Raila Odinga himself told the country that he's the one who wrote that thing, so don't argue with me about its contents. I know what the intention of that agreement was," he added.
Broad-Based Govt Post Raila
Sifuna's comments come hardly five days after he publicly announced the party's official commitment to remain in the 'broad-based government' following Raila's death.
Addressing the press on Monday, October 27, the legislator noted that ODM's participation in Ruto's government was not an act of submission but rather the continuation of Odinga's statesmanship.
"We reiterate the commitment of the party to the broad-based government until 2027, a relationship guided by the ten-point agenda entered into for the sake of peace and stability of the country,” said Sifuna.
Nonetheless, Sifuna has in the past been critical of Ruto's administration, casting doubt on ODM's association with the Kenya Kwanza government. At one point, he even called for a review of the 10-point agreement.
