The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has extended the closure of a section of the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe interchange by 11 days.
In a notice on Tuesday, September 23, KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said that the closure of this stretch will be from Tuesday, September 23, to Saturday, October 4.
According to Kimeli, closure will allow for road construction and drainage works along the route to enhance connectivity between the Makupa Bridge and the Changamwe area.
"KeNHA wishes to notify the public that the road construction works on a section of the Mombasa-Nairobi (A8) Highway between the Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange have been extended from Tuesday, September 23, 2025, to Saturday, October 4, 2025," the authority stated.
"This is to allow for road construction and drainage works to ensure seamless road connectivity between Makupa Bridge and the Changamwe area," it added.
To manage traffic, the authority has displayed a traffic management plan that will require motorists to share a section of the Nairobi-bound road.
During this period, motorists have been encouraged to ensure that they follow directives from traffic marshals who shall be stationed at the section to ensure seamless traffic flow in the area.
The Authority had initially announced the closure of the stretch from Saturday, August 23, to Sunday, September 7, 2025.
During this period, Kimeli, in a notice issued on Tuesday, August 19, had announced that the route would face a similar traffic disruption to pave the way for construction works.
"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of the Mombasa-Nairobi (A8) Highway will experience traffic disruption between the Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange from Saturday, August 23, 2025, to Sunday, September 7, 2025," Kimeli said in the notice.
The Makupa-Changamwe section is one of the busiest segments in the coastal region, as it mostly serves vehicles going in and out of the Port of Mombasa.
The Makupa bridge -Changamwe Interchange drainage construction works began in November 2024, according to KeNHA.
