Kericho County Assembly has suspended four MCAs who are said to have been caught on CCTV stoning the governor's office.
The incident allegedly occurred on August 15, during the impeachment process of Governor Eric Mutai. The four suspended are Kapsaos MCA, Paul Bii and nominated members such as Irene Chebet, Noela Opile and Fancy Korir.
In the CCTV footage, the MCAs were captured throwing stones and destroying other properties at the governor's office, which is just 500 meters from the county assembly.
The footage also showed them destroying the windows of the county assembly building and other properties during the riots.
Kericho County Assembly Majority Leader, Philip Rono, said that leaders were punished for misconduct following the chaos.
They have been banned from attending the proceedings for 90 days, while others are asked to issue an apology to the Power and Privileges Committee of the assembly.
“Today, the committee on powers was stabilising a report, disciplining members. Around 4 of them have been suspended by the committee for 90 days. They are banned from performing the responsibilities of the county assembly,” Rono said.
“These members threw stones and destroyed county assembly property, which is not a good behaviour,” he added.
Governor Mutai's Impeachment Escape
The impeachment motion against Governor Mutai was tabled on August 6, 2025, where he was accused of misconduct, misuse of office and violations of the constitution and other laws.
After the county assembly voted in favour of the motion, setting up a showdown at the Senate.
During the highly charged impeachment trial in Nairobi on August 29, several MCAs grabbed the nation's attention with responses, but ultimately, the Senate rejected the impeachment.
25 Senators voted to save Mutai, saying the county assembly did not meet the required threshold to remove the governor.
