Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua now says that the government is advanced stage of finalising instruments for the ratification of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions 189 and 190, following the death of a domestic worker in Nairobi.

The ILO Conventions 189 and 190 provide for a decent working environment for workers, ensuring their rights to fair wages, rest and social security by preventing violence and harassment in workplaces.

In a statement on Thursday, September 25, Mutua said the ratification of the ILO Conventions 189 and 190 would strengthen mechanisms for the protection of all domestic workers in Kenya.

This follows the gruesome murder of Zeituni Kavayo, a domestic worker who was reportedly assaulted by her employer while carrying out duties in Kilimani, Nairobi.

Mutua noted that investigations into Zeituni's death were in advanced stages to ensure that those culpable of the heinous act are brought to justice.

"The Ministry is working closely with the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation to ensure that thorough investigations are carried out and that justice is served without delay," Mutua affirmed.

While condemning Kavayo's murder, the CS disclosed that the heart-breaking incident reflected a persisting culture of discrimination, exploitation and violation of the rights of low-ranking workers in Kenya.

Mutua went ahead to assure Kenyans, particularly domestic workers, that their safety and rights remain the government's priority.

He expressed the government's commitment to decent work for all, adding that the Ministry would intensify awareness and enforcement of laws to protect domestic workers.

"All employers, including those who employ domestic workers, are reminded of their legal and moral duty to treat all workers with fairness and respect," the CS stated.

Mutua's update comes a day after detectives apprehended five Sudanese citizens over the death of Kavayo, who passed away under unclear circumstances.

Following their arrest, the suspects were taken to Kilimani Police Station, where they were interrogated even as the police continue to pursue more suspects.
