Three people, including two teachers, have been seriously injured after a suspected grenade explosion in a hotel in Mandera County.

According to the Mandera committee leaders, the incident happened on Saturday, October 5, at around 6pm at one of the hotels in the Kona B area of Madera Town.

The three are said to be admitted to Mandera County Teaching and Referral Hospital in critical condition.

"At around 6pm we received reports that there is a hotel that has been attacked at Kona B, and some of our people have been injured. We want to thank God that no one lost their life, but one person was critically injured," one community leader said.

The two injured teachers are said to be non-locals. "One is critically injured," reads a message on the teacher's posts online. The Teachers Service Commission has not confirmed the injuries nor issued a statement on the matter.

One of the injured teachers is from Duse Primary School, and the other is from Neboi Primary School in Neboi Ward, both in Madera East Sub-county.

According to residents, the incident adds to a growing list of attacks that have happened in the county in recent months. The residents have urged the national government to take action to curb the attacks.

"As a community, we are very sad because for quite some time we have been experiencing these attacks targeting our people, and as a community, we are taking action to ensure that this is resolved, but we want to ask security agencies to also take action," he added.

The region, which borders Somalia, has experienced multiple similar attacks in the past, often attributed to terror cells operating in the area.

Three months ago, seven police officers were injured after their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Gadudia–Laga Road in the same sub-county.

According to police reports, the attack happened between Aresa and Khalalio on Tuesday, July 8, when the officers were on board a Mandera Police Station Vehicle.

Of the seven officers on board, six sustained various injuries, ranging from leg and hand wounds to trauma on the forehead, chest, and eyes. One officer managed to escape the incident unscathed.
