Three people have been confirmed missing after a boat capsized on October 10, 2025, during a race in Tudor, Mombasa.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, at least 19 people were rescued. However search for three who are still missing is ongoing.
The boat had 22 people when it capsized during the ongoing East African Ocean Festival at Tudor Water Sports in Mombasa.
“A boat carrying 22 passengers capsized during the East Africa Ocean Festival at Tudor Water Sports. So far, 19 people have been rescued, while 3 remain missing,” the Red Cross stated.
Red Cross added that rescue operations are continuing to locate the remaining victims who remain unaccounted.
“Search and Rescue operations are ongoing, with a multi-agency team actively responding to locate the missing persons,” it added
The incident occurred just a few months after another boat capsized in the same region.
On September 19, 18 individuals were rescued after the boat capsized off coast of Manda in Lamu County. The boat was part of a fleet of nine boats that were taking part in a race in Lamu.
According to a witness, the boat capsized due to strong winds in the Indian Ocean during the race.
Faiz Amana, a local community leader in Lamu, stated that the rescue team faced many challenges, including adverse weather conditions and the small size of the boats they were using.
“We did not have any other help. Our boat is small and has no capacity, but we still managed to rescue people. Some had difficulties in breathing, others could not swim, but through cooperation, we were able to save them,” Amana said.
“We managed to rescue them together with their boats, which are expensive, and we have already brought them back to shore,” Amana added.
