Nyamira County has registered only 18 voters since the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) launched the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise on September 29.

In an update shared by the commission on Friday evening, the county emerged as the county with the fewest new registrations in the country, even as overall numbers disappointed as of October 8.

In total, only 20,754 voters were registered across the country, while an additional 3,207 transferred their polling station and 61 updated their details.

"While we commend this progress, turnout among the targeted youth remains lower than expected," IEBC admitted.

"With a national target of 6.3 million new voters, the Commission urges all eligible Kenyans, particularly the youth, to take this opportunity to register and make their voices count in the 2027 General Election."

As such, IEBC urged all eligible citizens, the targeted youth who recently got their IDs, to visit the nearest constituency office and register.

Of the 20,754 new registrations, Nairobi led with 4,804, also receiving 1,105 total transfers and 10 updates. In the new registration process, one can register in any constituency to vote in a different one.

Mombasa was the second with 1,379, and Kiambu was third with 1,203 new registered voters, while the rest of the 44 counties recorded less than 1,000 new voter registrations.

Machakos had 923, Nakuru had 840, Kisii had 728, Kakamega had 608, Murang'a had 588, and Siaya had 564 new registered voters.

Although most of the others recorded over 100 new voters, seven counties, including Nyamira County, went below.

Tana River, Lamu, Isiolo, Tharaka Nithi, Samburu, and Elgeyo Marakwet had 42, 36, 81, 70, 67, and 75 new registered voters, respectively.

This comes even as IEBC targets 6.3 million new registrations barely two years to the August 2027 General Elections, with a heightened new system meant to streamline the process.

From scanning identification cards to ensure efficiency and accuracy during the process to introducing more kits per constituency and even planned ward kits and Huduma Centre kits, the commission has expressed optimism that it will hit the target.
