Mbeere South Member of Parliament Nebart Muriuki was on Saturday October 11, forced to flee after a rowdy crowd charged towards him during a road stop in his constituency.

The incident ensued while the MP was attempting to mobilise a gathering at Kiritiri market, where his convoy had stopped while he prepared to address the residents.

According to reports, Muriuki, who was accompanied by a Kenya Kwanza-affiliated Member of the Meru County Assembly, was gathering residents for a snap roadside rally.

However, the situation quickly deteriorated when some of the locals began lashing out at the MP. As the situation escalated, a group of youths charged towards Muriuki's convoy.

Videos and images shared widely on the internet showed a group of locals rushing towards the legislator's vehicle as he drove off through the crowd.

"Go away, go away!" some of the residents could be heard shouting, even as others watched the unfolding.

United Opposition Rally

While commenting on the matter, a section of the locals criticised the MP, accusing him of reportedly trying to mobilise youths to disrupt a planned rally in the area by opposition leaders.

The incident took place just a few minutes before an entourage by opposition leaders led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka arrived in the area.

Addressing the residents, the Democracy for the Citizens' Party (DCP) leader accused some of the area politicians who are allied to President Ruto of reportedly attempting to sponsor goons to interfere with his rally.

Gachagua also hit out at the local MP and MCA, claiming that the duo was allegedly being used by the government to mobilise goons against opposition politicians.

"I have heard that they wanted to stone Riggy G, is that even possible. Is that MP even normal? The Head of State is now funding some politicians here to stop our rallies," Gachagua alleged.

"Ruto is deceiving politicians from this region, in Mt Kenya, he is paying politicians to stone us while he is empowering politicians and people from his backyard," he added.
