Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have mourned the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who died in India on Wednesday.

In a statement, Kenyatta described Raila as a brother and asserted that Raila’s death has left a significant void in the country’s political ecosystem, noting that his voice, influence, and vision had played a key role in shaping the country's democratic journey.

Uhuru, who acknowledged Raila’s significant influence on his own political journey, said the two leaders shared a common vision of fostering national peace and political harmony.

The former Head of State affirmed that Raila's solid legacy of unity and justice will forever be engraved in the country's history and will shape the country's political trajectory for future generations.

"Baba, as we fondly referred to him, was a man who made you sharpen your own ideas, compelling you to defend your positions with rigour and passion. However, in recent years, a different bond was forged: one of respect, of shared patriotism, and of a common desire to see a united Kenya," he added.

Uhuru praised Raila as a political colleague who always prioritised national peace and development above personal and political interests.

"I have lost a friend and a brother. I will miss our conversations, sometimes challenging, always insightful, and the fire of belief that never left his eyes," Uhuru said.

On the other hand, PM Modi described Raila as a cherished Friend of India, who had a special affection for India, its culture, values, and ancient wisdom.

“He had a special affection for India, our culture, values, and ancient wisdom. This was reflected in his efforts to strengthen India-Kenya ties,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

On his part, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said that Raila Odinga will be remembered as a selfless individual who was always at the vanguard in the fight for Kenya’s liberation and democracy.

According to Gachagua, despite their political differences, he will always be inspired by Raila's art of forming and sustaining a strong political party that survived 4 general elections.

"You dedicated your life in the service of humanity as a political activist, a Civil Servant, a University Lecturer, an MP, a Party Leader, a Cabinet Minister, a Prime Minister, and many other things. On all these, your trail of success and impact remains indelible," Gachagua said.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a morning walk on Wednesday in India, where he was undergoing treatment.

According to a hospital spokesperson, Raila was pronounced dead at around 9:52am upon arrival in the hospital. According to reports, Raila was with his daughters and relatives when he suffered cardiac arrest.
