The body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will spend the night at the Lee Funeral Home instead of at his Karen home as had earlier been planned.
This is according to the latest changes made by the Raila funeral committee, co-chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Raila's elder brother Oburu Odinga.
Following the update, once the public viewing at Nyayo Stadium concludes, the body will be taken to the funeral home for preparation ahead of the trip to Kisumu on Saturday morning.
"The national funeral committee wishes to announce to the public that due to unavoidable circumstances, the body of the HE. The late Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga will not be taken to his Karen residence for an overnight stay as earlier planned," a statement shared by the ODM party read.
"Instead, after public viewing that is currently going on at the Nyayo National Stadium, it will be taken back to the Lee Funeral Home for preservation in readiness for airlifting to Kisumu tomorrow (Saturday 18/10/2025) morning. We apologise for the inconvenience caused."
According to the initial programme, Raila's body was expected to be taken to the Lee Funeral Home after landing at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Thursday morning.
However, the idea was abandoned after thousands flooded the airport and the roads, slowing the motorcade that was to head to the funeral home and then for public viewing at the Parliament Buildings.
Consequently, the funeral home was cancelled, and the viewing was moved from the Parliament Buildings to the Kasarani Stadium to accommodate the surging crowds.
Although the viewing was set to start at 12pm, it ended up starting past 4pm and extended deep into the night.
Chaos had escalated before the public viewing began at the Moi International Sports Centre, leading the police to fire teargas. Several were injured in the commotion, with some reports alleging that some had died.
According to the Medical Services PS, Dr Ouma Oluga, approximately 100 people were treated after sustaining injuries during the chaos.
The mourners were also granted another opportunity to view the body at the Nyayo Stadium after the State Funeral. The viewing is currently ongoing.
