Former United States President Barack Obama has finally broken his silence following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, sending a moving tribute following days of pressure from Kenyans online.

In his statement on October 18, Obama described Odinga as a true champion of democracy and a symbol of resilience and reconciliation in African politics.

“Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya,” he stated.

He added that he witnessed Odinga’s commitment to national unity and peace, stating that Odinga placed Kenyans’ interests above his own.

“Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions. Like few other leaders anywhere, he was willing to choose the path of peaceful reconciliation without compromising his core values,” he added.

He praised Odinga, stating that his legacy extended beyond Kenya's borders, inspiring many across Africa and around the world.

"Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but across Africa and around the world. I know he will be missed. Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya," part of Obama's statement reads.

Obama's tribute comes day after American civil rights activist, Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr mourned Odinga as a dear friend and brother who stood firm in the face of oppression.

"Today, we mourn the passing of my dear friend and brother, His Excellency Raila Amollo Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya - a freedom fighter, statesman, and tireless champion for democracy and human rights," a statement by Jesse Jackson read in part.

Obama joins several world leaders in mourning including Indian Prime Minister Nerandra Modi and Emmanuel Macron.

Kenyans Question Delayed Tribute

Obama’s message came after criticism and pressure from Kenyans on social media, who questioned his silence following Odinga’s passing on October 15, 2025.

Many Kenyans reminded Obama of his family ties to Kenya and his past interactions with Odinga, demanding he publicly acknowledge the late leader’s contributions.

The statement was received with Kenyans' mixed reactions, some appreciating the gesture, while others felt it came too late.

“Thank you, Mr. President. Baba deserves a grand farewell. I am one of the many Kenyans living in the USA, proud to have been governed by you and I wish Baba got a chance on the other end. I hope one day you will actually surprise your Luo people  & actually attend their Luo cultural day,” a Kenyan said.

“All Kenyans waited for this... May his soul rest in peace,” another one added.

Raila Odinga, 80, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, leaving behind a powerful legacy of resilience, reform, and an unwavering fight for democracy in Kenya.
