Two people died following a stampede at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday, October 17, during the public viewing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga body, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF) emergency response team.
As the funeral got under way, some members of the crowd surged forward to view Odinga's body, crushing some mourners in the melee.
The stampede occurred as dignitaries were leaving the venue and mourners were invited to view the body.
Kenya Red Cross confirmed that several people were injured during the stampede, while others received urgent care.
“Challenging day for our teams at Nyayo Stadium, responding to a stampede that left many in need of urgent care. Kenya Red Cross responders continue to provide first aid, psychosocial support and assist with medical evacuations alongside emergency partners.”

This incident followed alleged fatalities that occurred on October 16, when chaos erupted at Kasarani stadium during public viewing of Odinga’s body.
The chaos ensued when the huge crowd inside the stadium was forced to leave the stadium abruptly as security officers cleared the venue. Within minutes, the stadium, which had been filled to capacity, was virtually empty.
According to reports, the chaos began when some Kenyans inside the stadium apparently started throwing stones.
On October 17, Medical Services Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga confirmed that approximately 100 individuals were treated after sustaining injuries during the chaos witnessed during the viewing of the body at Kasarani.
“We would like to request Kenyans to keep calm and maintain order. We are all mourning; we should maintain peace,” he said.

“Let us not be aggressive in our efforts. Yesterday, there was chaos at Kasarani, and people got injured. Approximately 100 people received treatment. Please, we do not want people to get injured again,” Oluga added.
